Plastic Chair Project

 Plastic Chair Project

An investigation of the Monobloc chair.

This project tells a story of the social impact of the Monobloc chair.
As a result from research using a live portrait stand. People where invited to sit on a Monobloc and tell their story of this chair. In return for their story they’ve gotten a portrait. As an outcome of this project the memories where translated in a series of paintings.

“A chair that owes its name from its production method: one(mono) piece(bloc) of plastic molded in a shape. Because this process is very short and the production costs are very low, from 1983 onwards the chair was included in our society worldwide.”

“Mijn vrouw zat hier altijd. Ik zat daarzo en mijn vrouw zat hierzo, omdat ze moest lopen. Want dat wou ze dan, een biertje pakken of wat eten halen. Vaste prik, heerlijk. op haar gemakkie. Leuk he, gezellig.”

- Mr. Diemen

“This chair reminds me of a place that my parents stayed one summer that had a doc on a lake and somebody had trown one of those chairs in the water and we spend all summer trying to dive and get it out of the water. And I think we did, I don’t remember though.”

-D. Maclean

“ It’s like it' doen’t really feel like a significant but then you sit down in it, it kind of brings back all the memories. It’ the kind of comfort, the feel of it. It makes you realize that this is like the Monobloc, yeah.”

-M. Wood

“Yeah we used to have them in our backyard when I was living in Australia and they would be always covered with bird poop.”

-Matt

“I think I would definitely buy myself this chair. One because it has sentimental values attached to it. When I think about it I think about growing up as a child. We always had at least one of those chairs in the house, even the kiddy versions, for babies.”

-S. Gillian

“ The memorie that i associate with this chair which i don’t like. Is, there was you know, people doing events of the middle of the fucking streets. They are putting everywhere these chairs and no-one would be able to pass. It’s insane! “

-O. Aidara

“The chair reminds me of our summerhouse because we had those chairs there. And all my family used to go there in the summer and I remember my aunt sitting on that chair and playing domino’s”

-L. Ali
